What makes the Tsho Rolpa Trek Unique?

Tsho Rolpa Lake: The largest Glacier Lake in Nepal

Tsho Rolpa Lake, at an altitude of 4580m, is one of the largest glacier lakes in Nepal. The turquoise Lake is surrounded by snow-capped mountain peaks such as Pharchamo Peak(6187m), Yalung Ri( 5630m), and Chukyimago (6685m). Covering an area of 1.537 square kilometres, this lake is the attraction point of Rolwaling Valley for tourists worldwide.

Dudh Kunda: A hidden gem in Rolwaling valley

Dudh Kunda, a sacred lake at an altitude of 4700m, is a hidden gem of Rolwaling Valley. This holy lake, known as the 'Milk Lake, ' holds great religious and spiritual significance and attracts Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims. This hidden site on the lap of Gaurishankar(7145m) offers raw natural beauty and a mountain view.

The untouched beauty of the Rolwaling valley

The raw and untouched beauty of Rolwalinh valley makes the Tsho Rolpa Trek unique compared to other treks in Nepal. Although the Tsho Rolpa Trekking Trail is near Kathmandu, it is rarely explored. Witness the raw natural beauty along the trekking trail, which passes through untouched natural landscapes, forests teeming with various flora and fauna, alpine meadows, and rocky moraines, eventually leading to the Tsho Rolpa Lake and Dudh Kunda.

Local culture and communities

Along with its natural beauty, Tsho Rolpa Trekking offers great cultural significance, making it a unique trekking experience in Nepal's hidden valley. The Tsho rope trekking trail passes through various ethnic Sherpa villages, such as Simi Gaun, Dongdong, Beding, and Naa Gaun. Explore these villages and experience the Himalayas' local culture, lifestyle, and tradition.

Tsho Rolpa Trek vs Langtang Valley Trek

The Tsho Rolpa Trek and the Langtang Valley Trek are similar in that they take you through ethnic villages to a vantage point that offers scenic mountain views. Both treks are nearer to the Capital, Kathmandu, and the starting point is just a 6-7-hour drive.

Langtang Valley Trek is one of the popular trekking destinations in Nepal. It takes you through the Gurung and Tamang villages to popular vantage points such as Kyanjin Ri(4773m) and Tserko Ri(5033m). This popular viewpoint in the Langtang region offers breathtaking views of Langtang Lirung(7227m), Langtang Ri(7205m), Yala Peak (5520m), Naya Khang (5844m), Shishapangma (8027m), and many more.

Similarly, the Tsho Rolpa Lake Trek is an off-the-beaten-path trekking experience through the hidden Rolwaling Valley. This less-explored route passes through ethnic Sherpa Villages, taking in the Tsho Rolpa Lake and hidden Dudh Kunda. It also offers magnificent views of mountain peaks, including Gauri Shankar (7145m), Melungtse (7181m), Kang Nachugo(6735m), Yulng Ri (5630m), Pharchamo Peak(6187m), and Chukyimago (6685m).

The Langtang Valley Trek and the Tsho Rolpa Trek share similar features. However, Tsho Rolpa is ideal for those seeking a peaceful, less crowded trek with stunning mountain views. Similarly, the Langtang Trek provides well-equipped teahouses for those desiring a luxurious trekking experience in the Nepal Himalayas. The Langtang Trek is also suitable for beginners, families, and children.

Do I need travel insurance for the Tsho Rolpa Trek?

Travel insurance is mandatory for trekking in the Nepalese Himalayas. Likewise, it is essential for the Tsho Rolpa Trek, as it involves trekking above 4000 meters, where unexpected and uncertain risks can occur. Obtain the best insurance plan that covers all medical emergencies, rescue operations, trekking issues on the trail, flight cancellations, lost baggage, and more.

Travel insurance guarantees financial security and boosts confidence, ensuring a safe and memorable trekking experience.

Furthermore, we focus on conserving natural resources and environmental sanitation by encouraging our clients and locals to do so. We encourage our clients to use reusable bottles instead of plastic, inspiring travelers and locals to practice responsible waste management.

Best Time to Trek to Tsho Rolpa Lake

The ideal time to visit Tsho Rolpa is Spring (March to April) and Autumn (September to November). These seasons offer clear skies, pleasant weather, and excellent visibility compared to other times. This time of the year provides the best mountain views, and the trails are less likely to be affected by rain or snow. It is the best season to trek in Nepal.

Tsho Rolpa Trek can be accomplished during winter (December-February) and the monsoon (June-August). However, this off-the-beaten trekking route is unpopular, so most teahouses are closed during the off-season. Along with this, you might face the challenges of rainfall, slippery trails, and landscapes during the monsoon season, whereas during winter, the extreme cold and snowfall make the trek challenging.

Mandatory Permits for Tsho Rolpa Lake Trekking

Permits are essential for trekking to the Rolwaling Valley. All foreigners must obtain a GauriShankar Conservation area permit and a Trekker's Information Management System (TIMS) card. Once you choose Overland Trek Nepal for your Tsho Rolpa Trek, we handle the required paperwork and the permit cards.

Entry permit cost for the Tsho Rolpa Trek:

  • TIMS Card cost: NPR 1000
  • GauriShankar Conservation Area Permit: NPR 3000

How difficult is the Tsho Rolpa Lake Trek?

The Tsho Rolpa Trek is moderately challenging, involving various ascents and descents. The trekking trail above 4000 m takes you to Tsho Rolpa at 4580m and Dudh Kunda at 4700m, which poses a challenge for trekkers of all levels.

However, this doesn't imply that beginners can't do this trek. Those with good physical fitness can complete the Tsho Rolpa Trek. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced trekker, preparation is essential. Ensure you are physically and mentally prepared, maintain a balanced diet, bring appropriate gear, and select the best trekking season.

Altitude challenges and preventive measures for the Tsho Rolpa Trekking

Altitude sickness is normal at higher altitudes as oxygen levels decrease and affects the body unpredictably. Trekking above 3000 meters can cause altitude sickness symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, dizziness, blocked ears, headache, fatigue, loss of appetite, insomnia, discomfort, rapid heartbeat, and other symptoms.

During your Tsho Rolpa Trek, you reach a maximum elevation of 4700 meters, at this point, you may experience such symptoms. Although our Tsho Rolpa Trek itinerary is designed to reduce altitude-related challenges, we recommend you consult our guides if such symptoms are experienced. Take the preventive measures such as strolling, allowing extra time for the trek, consuming nutritious soups, maintaining a healthy diet, limiting alcohol intake, and staying hydrated with 4-5 litres of water daily.

Where to eat and stay during the Tsho Rolpa Lake Trek

The Tsho Rolpa trekking route passes through villages that offer accommodation in comfortable and well-equipped teahouses.
