Brief Overview of Everest Base Camp Trek without Flight

Is it possible to go to Everest Base Camp without a Flight? It is possible without a flight, opting for the overland route via Salleri. This iconic route begins with a drive to Thamdanda(2344m) and joins the regular 12-day Short Everest Base Camp Trek.

Everest Base Camp Trekby road is an old, historical route of Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hilary. This alternative route passes through traditional villages, offering a glimpse of local communities' vibrant culture and lifestyle. It is an excellent option for those who want to avoid the unpredictable Luka flight schedules and are seeking to explore the less-explored lower Everest Region.

The trekking route to the base camp of the World’s highest peak, Mount Everest (8848.86m), offers breathtaking views of Lhotse (8516m), Nuptse (7861m),Pumori (7161m), Ama Dablam Peak (6812m), and many more. Along with the mountain views, this popular trekking route also features stunning glaciers, the iconic Kalapatthar, and the vibrant Namche Bazaar, which rewards with a magical sunrise over the peaks.

Besides the natural attractions, this trek offers travelers the opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich culture and traditions of the Khumbu region, home to the Sherpa community. Along the route, the Khumjung Monastery,Tengboche Monastery, and Mani walls create a unique spiritual connection to the Tibetan Buddhist culture.

However, the usual Everest Base Camp Trekking route is challenging as it involves trekking from 4000 to 5500 meters. The route by road offers a smoother acclimatization process. The trek starts from a lower altitude, helping trekkers, including beginners, adjust their bodies to the elevation and minimizing the risk of altitude sickness.

Hike to Everest Base Camp without flying to Lukla

Everest Base Camp Trek by road starts from Kathmandu(1400m) and drives along the countryside road for 8-9 hours to Thamdanda(2344m). The actual trek begins from here, ascending through the small settlements to reach Phakding(2650m), and joins the regular trekking route of the 12-day Everest Base Camp Trek. The next day passing through the Monjo and Jhorsale village and crossing the thrilling Hilary Bridge, the trek heads to Namche Bazaar(3440m).

Acclimatize in Namche, hiking up to Everest View Hotel and Khumjung Monastery. Afterward, the trek gains elevation passing through the Tengboche(3860m), Dingboche(4400m), Lobuche(4900m), and Gorakshep(5100m). From Gorakshep hike to Everest Base Camp (5364m) to witness a close view of the world's tallest peak Mt Everest (8848.86m).

After enjoying the moment at Base Camp, retrace the same route to Gorakshep and hike to Kalapthhar(5555m) before heading toward Pheriche(4200m). From here, trek towards Namche and follow the same route to Thamdanda before returning to Kathmandu.
