Overview of Annapurna Circuit and Poon Hill Trek

Annapurna Circuit Trekking with Poon Hill is a spectacular journey that blends the classic Annapurna Circuit Trek with the Poon Hill viewpoint, offering trekkers an extended adventure through Nepal’s most scenic landscapes. From the high-altitude thrill of Thorong La Pass (5,416m) to the golden sunrise over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges at Poon Hill (3,210m), this trek is an experience like no other.

This excursion through the loop of the Annapurna Region offers an unparalleled combination of adventure, cultural immersion, and breathtaking landscapes. By adding Poon Hill (3,210m) to your itinerary, you get to witness the best sunrise view of the Annapurna Massif, making this trek even more rewarding. Moreover, the trek passes through diverse landscapes, ranging from subtropical forests to high-altitude desert terrains, giving trekkers a unique experience. Short Poon Hill Trek is itself one of the best short treks in Nepal.

While many beginners do Poon Hill Trek only to start their trekking journey, adding ACT will give an extra adventure and challenges. Therefore, if you are a beginner then it can be a little challenging, especially crossing Thorong La Pass (5416m). However, with proper training, one can complete this trek without any difficulty. Are you ready to embark on this two-week venture around the Annapurna Loop?

Tour PlanExpand all

The drive from Kathmandu to Besisahar starts early, winding through scenic hills, terraced fields, and riverside villages along the Prithvi Highway. After about 5-6 hours, we reach Besisahar, the gateway to the Annapurna Circuit. From here, a 4WD jeep takes us on a bumpy off-road ride along the Marsyangdi River, passing waterfalls and charming villages like Syange and Jagat. The 3–4-hour drive to Dharapani (1,860m) offers stunning mountain views and a taste of the rugged terrain ahead. By evening, we settle into Dharapani, ready to kick off the trekking adventure.

Max Altitude: 1860 m. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & DinnerAccommodation: TeahouseDistance: 8-9 hrs

Start your day with a delicious breakfast of Annapurna for the first time and kick off your trek around 8 am. The trek from Dharapani to Chame (2,670m) is a beautiful journey through lush forests, charming villages, and stunning mountain scenery. The trail follows the Marsyangdi River, passing through Bagarchhap, where Tibetan-style houses sit beneath the towering peaks of Annapurna II and Lamjung Himal. As we walk, the air gets crisper, the forests denser, and the views more dramatic. Crossing suspension bridges and winding through pine-covered trails, you finally reach Chame, the bustling headquarters of the Manang district. Overnight stay at Chame.

Max Altitude: 2,670 m. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & DinnerAccommodation: TeahouseDistance: 5-6 hrs

The trek from Chame to Upper Pisang (3,300m) is a breathtaking journey through some of the most scenic sections of the Annapurna Circuit. The trail winds through dense pine forests, crosses suspension bridges over the Marsyangdi River, and gradually opens up to stunning mountain views. As you climb higher, the massive rock face of Paungda Danda—a towering, curved cliff sacred to the local people—comes into view. The air gets thinner, and the landscape starts to feel more alpine. Reaching Upper Pisang, a traditional village with prayer wheels, mani walls, and a stunning monastery, you are greeted with panoramic views of Annapurna II, III, and IV. The peaceful setting and crisp mountain air make it an ideal place to rest and acclimatize. Overnight stay at Upper Pisang.

Max Altitude: 3,300 m. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & DinnerAccommodation: TeahouseDistance: 5-6 hrs

Just like previous days, take your breakfast around 7:30 am and kick off your hike around 8 am. The trek from Upper Pisang to Manang (3,540m) is a stunning journey through high-altitude villages and dramatic mountain landscapes. Taking the high route via Ghyaru and Ngawal, you climb along a scenic ridge with incredible views of Annapurna II, III, IV, and Gangapurna. The trail winds through ancient stone villages, prayer flags, and monasteries before gradually descending into the dry, open valley of Manang. As you reach this picturesque Himalayan town, you can explore its charming alleys, visit a monastery, or simply relax and take in the breathtaking surroundings. Overnight stay at Manang.

Max Altitude: 3,540 m. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & DinnerAccommodation: TeahouseDistance: 6-7 hrs

It is an important day of this trip to adapt yourself to the higher altitude. Today, you will do short hiking or roaming around the Manang Village to keep your body moving. The village of Manang is bounded by towering peaks and glacial lakes. You can do side trips to Gangapurna Lake or Praken Gompa for a hike during the daytime. Our trekking guide will take you around and give you more tips on how to acclimatize in the high altitude of Nepal. Overnight stay at Manang.

Max Altitude: 4800 m. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & DinnerAccommodation: TeahouseDistance: 3-4 hrs

The trek from Manang to Yak Kharka (4,020m) is a gradual but noticeable ascent, as the landscape becomes more barren and the air thinner. Leaving Manang, you will pass Tenki Village and climb above the Marsyangdi Valley, following a trail through juniper bushes and alpine meadows where yaks graze. As you gain altitude, the towering peaks of Annapurna III, Gangapurna, and Tilicho Peak come into view. The trek is short, around 4-5 hours, allowing time to acclimatize. By afternoon, you will reach Yak Kharka, a small settlement with teahouses, where you rest and enjoy the quiet beauty of the high Himalayas.

Max Altitude: 4,020 m. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & DinnerAccommodation: TeahouseDistance: 4-5 hrs

The trek from Yak Kharka to Thorong Phedi (4,450m) is a short but challenging climb as we move deeper into the high-altitude terrain. The trail ascends gradually along the Marsyangdi River, crossing small streams and rocky slopes, with stunning views of Gundang, Khatungkang, and Thorong Peak. As you gain elevation, the air gets thinner, making a steady pace essential. After about 4-5 hours of trekking, we arrive at Thorong Phedi, the last stop before crossing Thorong La Pass. For those feeling strong, an optional hike to High Camp (4,900m) can help with acclimatization. The evening is spent resting and preparing for the big climb ahead. Overnight stay at Thorong Phedi.

Max Altitude: 4,450 m. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & DinnerAccommodation: TeahouseDistance: 4-5 hrs

Start your hike early morning around 4-5 as you have to cross Thornag La Pass before it starts to get windy. The toughest yet most rewarding day of the trek begins early, usually around 4-5 AM, as we set out to cross Thorong La Pass (5,416m). The trail is steep and challenging, with thin air and freezing temperatures, but the breathtaking sunrise over the Himalayas makes it all worthwhile. Reaching the top of the pass is a triumphant moment, with prayer flags fluttering and incredible views of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and the Kali Gandaki Valley. After soaking in the achievement, we begin the long descent to Muktinath (3,800m), a sacred pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists. The lower altitude feels refreshing as we explore the Muktinath Temple and its eternal flame before settling in for a well-earned rest.

Max Altitude: 3800 m. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & DinnerAccommodation: TeahouseDistance: 8-9 hrs

Passing through Jharkot and Kagbeni, you see ancient monasteries, apple orchards, and stunning views of Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri. The dry, desert-like terrain contrasts with the lush greenery of lower altitudes. By afternoon, you will reach Jomsom, a lively town famous for its strong winds and apple products. Here, we can explore the local market, visit the small ecology museum, or just unwind with a warm meal, preparing for the next day’s journey. Overnight stay at Jomsom.

Max Altitude: 2720 m. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & DinnerAccommodation: TeahouseDistance: 4-5 hrs

After several days of Hiking, today you will have a short drive before Hiking to Poon Hill. The drive from Jomsom to Tatopani is a scenic and adventurous journey, following the Kali Gandaki River through the world’s deepest gorge, nestled between Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. The 4–5-hour jeep ride takes you through charming villages like Marpha, Tukuche, and Ghasa, known for their apple orchards and Tibetan-style houses. As you descend, the barren, wind-swept landscapes gradually turn into lush greenery. Arriving in Tatopani (1,190m), you’re welcomed by the famous natural hot springs, a perfect spot to relax and soothe your tired muscles after days of trekking. Overnight stay at Tatopani.

Max Altitude: 1190 m. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & DinnerAccommodation: TeahouseDistance: 4-5 hrs

The trek from Tatopani to Ghorepani (2,860m) is a long one but well worth it, taking you from warm subtropical to cool rhododendron forests. The trail starts with a gradual climb through villages and farmland and then the real climb begins - a steep uphill climb through Sikha and Chitre. As you go higher the air gets cooler and enter the beautiful rhododendron forests that Ghorepani is famous for. After 7-8 hours of walking, you will reach Ghorepani, a lively village with stunning views of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, and Nilgiri. A warm meal and a cozy teahouse are the perfect place to rest before the early morning Poon Hill hike. Overnight stay at Ghorepani.

As the sun rises, you will be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, and Machhapuchhre, bathed in golden light. After soaking in the scenery, we return to Ghorepani for breakfast before starting the long descent to Nayapul. The 6–7-hour trek takes us through lush rhododendron forests, charming villages, and terraced fields, gradually leading back to warmer altitudes. At Nayapul, we hop into a vehicle for a short 1.5-hour drive to Pokhara, where we can finally relax by Phewa Lake and celebrate the end of an incredible journey. Overnight stay at Pokhara.

Best Time for Annapurna Circuit with Poon Hill Trek

Choosing the right season for trekking plays a crucial role in the overall experience. The best time for the Annapurna Circuit Trekking with Poon Hill is during spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November). These seasons offer clear skies, stable weather conditions, and breathtaking views of the Himalayan ranges. Spring is particularly beautiful as the rhododendron forests bloom, adding vibrant colors to the trail. Autumn is the most popular season, providing excellent visibility and comfortable trekking temperatures. Winter trekking is possible but can be challenging due to heavy snowfall at Thorong La Pass (5,416m). The monsoon season (June-August) is not recommended due to heavy rainfall, slippery trails, and landslides in certain areas.

Necessary gear for the trip will help you in making your journey stress-free, safe, and comfortable. Moreover, if you have the most essential equipment like Jackets, sleeping bags, etc. it can be life-saving from the severe cold as well. So, let’s dive into the common gear you need for this trek:

  • Upper Body Clothing: Base Layers, Thermal Tops, Half-sleeve T-shirts, Fleece jacket, Wind stopper, Down Jacket, Woolen Hat,
  • Lower Body Clothing: Inner Thermal, Hiking Pants, Trekking Trousers, Hiking Shorts, Woolen Socks, and Hiking Boots.
  • Miscellaneous Gear: First Aid Kit, Toiletries, Battery Charger, Power Bank, Head Lamp, etc.

Accommodations, Electricity, and Internet in the Annapurna Trekking Route of Nepal

This ACT route offers a range of accommodations, from basic teahouses to more comfortable lodges, depending on the altitude and remoteness of the area. In lower regions like Besisahar, Chame, and Manang on the Annapurna Circuit and Ghorepani and Tadapani on the Poon Hill route, trekkers can find cozy lodges with private rooms, attached bathrooms, and even hot showers. As you ascend to higher altitudes like Thorong Phedi or High Camp, accommodations become more basic, with shared dormitory-style rooms and common bathrooms.

Electricity is available throughout most of the trekking route, primarily powered by hydroelectricity and solar panels. In lower-altitude villages, charging electronic devices is often free, but in higher elevations, teahouses may charge a small fee per hour for battery charging due to limited power supply.

Internet access is improving, with WiFi available in most lodges along the trek, especially in popular stops like Manang, Muktinath, and Ghorepani. However, the connection can be slow and unreliable at higher elevations. Many trekkers rely on Ncell or Nepal Telecom SIM cards with mobile data, which offer better coverage in some areas. It’s best to manage expectations, as internet and phone signals may be weak or unavailable in remote sections.

Meals in the teahouse of Annapurna

Generally, the meal items in the high-altitude trek like Annapurna Round are very limited. It is not like the luxury varieties that are found in the cities like Kathmandu and Pokhara. However, you can choose one main course during each meal from the Menu. Here are the lists of food items that are available along the route:

  • Breakfast Items: Porridge, Pancake, Muesli, Boiled Eggs, Omelet, Tibetan Bread, and Hot drinks.
  • Lunch and Dinner: Daal Bhat, Pizza, Burger, Fried rice, Plain Rice, Vegetable Curry, Spaghetti, Spring Roll, Mo mo, Chow Mein, Soups, etc.

Altitude Sickness on the Thorong La Pass: What You Need to Know

Crossing Thorong La Pass (5,416m) on the Annapurna Round Trek is an incredible experience, but the high altitude can take a toll if you’re not prepared. With oxygen levels dropping as you climb, altitude sickness (AMS) is a real concern, especially between Manang (3,540m) and Thorong La. Symptoms like headaches, dizziness, nausea, and fatigue can creep in if you ascend too quickly. The key to avoiding AMS is proper acclimatization—one day at Manang for acclimatization, take it slow, and follow the "climb high, sleep low" rule. Staying hydrated (3-4 liters of water per day), eating carb-rich meals, and avoiding alcohol can make a huge difference. If you start feeling off, listen to your body—mild symptoms mean you should rest, while severe signs like confusion or trouble breathing mean it’s time to descend immediately. With the right preparation, you’ll not only conquer Thorong La Pass but also fully enjoy the stunning landscapes and culture of the Annapurna Circuit.

How to Train for Annapurna Circuit Trek?

The Annapurna Circuit Trek with Poon Hill is moderate to challenging, requiring good physical fitness and proper preparation. To ensure a successful trek, it is recommended to:

  • Engage in cardio & endurance training such as running, cycling, and hiking to improve stamina.
  • Incorporate strength training, especially focusing on legs and core muscles, to handle steep ascents and descents.
  • Practice altitude training by doing pre-acclimatization hikes or staying at high altitudes before the trek.
  • Mental preparation is equally important—understanding the trek's challenges and staying positive can greatly impact your experience.
  • Hydration and a proper diet before and during the trek help in maintaining energy levels and avoiding altitude sickness.

Why Choose a Guided Trek in the Annapurna Region?

While independent trekking is possible, hiring a trekking guide in Nepal significantly enhances your safety and overall experience. The guide is a good companion to help you in navigating the pathways and arranging the logistics. Imagine, you are focused on nature without worrying about the trails, places, to stay, and other arrangements. A licensed trekking guide provides:

  • Expert navigation and safety measures to ensure a smooth journey
  • Cultural insights into local traditions, customs, and history
  • Assistance in case of altitude sickness or emergencies
  • Help with permits, accommodations, and logistics

Additionally, hiring a porter can relieve you from carrying a heavy backpack, allowing you to focus on enjoying the scenery. The trekking guide cost in Nepal varies depending on the season, duration, and group size but typically ranges from $25 to $40 per day, while porter fees range from $20 to $25 per day.
