Overview of Everest High Passes Trek

Everest Three High Passes Trek is an incredible journey through the loop of the Khumbu Region. This thrilling journey combines some of Nepal's highest passes: Kongma La Pass (5535m), Cho La Pass (5420m), and Renjo La Pass (5360m). In addition to these passes, walk over the iconic Everest Base Camp (5364m) and Kala Pathhar (5555m). This journey to the loop of the whole Everest Region allows one to experience pristine lakes, Ice Fall, Glaciers, High mountains, Sherpa Community, striking landscapes, diverse flora & fauna in Sagarmatha National Park, and vantage viewpoints.

During this trek, get ready to witness some magical mountains, including Mount Everest, in front of your eyes. The awe-inspiring views of soaring peaks, wonderful Sherpa Villages, natural scenery, ice falls, and glaciers will leave you speechless. Though the voyage is mentally and physically tough, it is rewarded with a lifetime experience in the Himalayas.

Be part of this adventurous trip to the highest passes of the Everest Region. Without a doubt, this has to be the most thrilling and physically demanding trek of Nepal. Hence, those nomads who want to push themselves beyond their limits and are extremely fit can embark on this adventure. Mental Resilience is equally crucial to overcoming this kind of adventure.

Hike to Everest Base Camp with Renjo La Pass, Chola Pass & Kongma La Pass

This is pure adrenaline through high passes to the iconic Everest Base Camp. It is like a mountaineering journey through high passes over 5000 meters. While trekking to Everest Base Camp is still a dream for many trekkers, this route leads you to the iconic foothills of Mount Everest along with Renjo La Pass, Cho La Pass, and Kongma La Pass. Each pass provides a different perspective of mountain vistas, landscapes, and glaciers.

The Everest Three High Pass Trekking Path provides what many travelers dream of. Hiking to Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar is itself an achievement during this trip. Likewise, while crossing Renjo La Pass, admire the panoramic views of Gokyo Lakes and Mt. Everest. Cho La Pass leads the way between two gigantic peaks, Lobuche (6135m) and Cholatse (6443m). Lastly, Kongma La Pass delivers mind-boggling views of Lhotse, Nuptse, and Makalu.

Why choose Everest Three Passes Trek in Nepal?

Many trekking enthusiasts choose either Everest Base Camp Trek or Gokyo Valley Trek while planning a trip to Everest Region. Though both of these trekking routes have their charm and uniqueness, the Everest Three High Pass Trek stands as a wholesome journey to experience an exhilarating trekking experience. Here are the reasons why you should choose the Everest Three High Passes Trek in Nepal:

High Altitude Trek over 5000 meters

The trek itself is called the Three High Passes trek as it follows strenuous passes like Renjo La Pass (5465m), Cho La Pass (5420m), and Kongma La Pass (5535m). These are high-altitude journeys traversing through challenging landscapes and rugged terrain. Anyone who is seeking high-altitude trekking routes in Nepal can do this trek.

Excellent Views of Landscapes and Vistas

Though Everest Base Camp Trek and Gokyo Valley deliver breathtaking scenes of mountains and lakes respectively, the Everest 3 Pass Trek combines both of these along with striking landscapes. You can enjoy the views of Mount Everest, Mt. Lhotse, Makalu, Nuptse, Pumori, Ama Dablam, etc. from different angles. Likewise, the diverse landscapes and high passes are equally staggering.

Get more of the Khumbu Region and Sherpa Community

Despite high peaks, passes, and landscapes, three-pass trek routes follow several tranquil Sherpa Settlements. A quick visit to several monasteries like Tengboche Monastery and a small chorten allows you to experience Buddhist culture. Likewise, in-depth sights at the lifestyle of the Local people provide a typical cultural experience during the trek.

Wholesome Everest Trekking Experience

Unlike the 14-day Everest Base Camp Trek, which focuses on reaching Kala Patthar & Base Camp, this Three Passes Trek follows the whole Everest Loop. It allows you to Hike Everest Base Camp, Hike Kala Patthar, and visit Gokyo Valley at the same time. Hence, it gives the complete Everest Trekking experience combining other popular trekking routes of the Everest Region.

How Hard is 3 Passes Trek?

Well, crossing three high passes above 5000 meters is never easy. Sometimes even classic Everest Base Camp Trek is difficult to complete because of various reasons. This Everest Three Passes Trek combines with EBC and Kala Patthar, which means, the trip covers a total of five places that are over 5000 meters. You need to hike through the steep path, rugged trail, high passes, ascending, descending, suspension bridges, and strenuous landscapes. These factors are part of your Challenging Trek.

Likewise, the high altitude trek several times makes this journey even more challenging. Altitude Sickness can cause a serious problem while hiking above 5000 meters for several days. If it isn’t handled or prevented carefully it can take the life of wanderers in the Everest Region. Hence, beginners with no past trekking experience in high elevations are not recommended. Even travelers with past trekking experience find this route strenuous and mentally challenging.

18-day Three High Passes Trek Itinerary & Cost

Imagine, covering more than 5 trekking routes of the Everest Region in the same three high passes trek. This voyage passes through different trails such as the 12-Day Everest Base Camp Trek, Everest View Trek, Gokyo Lake Trek, Everest Panorama Trek, and Gokyo Chola Pass EBC Trek. Hence, the Everest Three High Passes Trek cost ranges from $1899 to $2599 per person. The cost covers the itinerary, trekking guide fee, porter fee, domestic flight fare, accommodations, meals, and several other services.

The Everest 3-pass trek begins from Lukla just like EBC Trek or Ama Dablam Base Camp Trek. And, until Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar it follows the EBC Trek route via Chukkung Valley. En route trekkers will cross Kongma La Pass. The trekking path continues towards Gokyo Valley via Dzongla and Cho La Pass. It already covers 2 of the high passes including Kala Patthar & EBC. Lastly, after exploring Gokyo Valley and Lakes, the trail follows Renjo La Pass to reconnect at Namche Bazaar again. Our 18-day Everest Three High Passes Trek Itinerary finishes at Lukla and flies back to Kathmandu.

Socially responsible travel to the Everest

For a better trekking experience, we inspire our trekking members to visit the Everest Region to be socially responsible. • Breakfast Items: Tibetan Bread, Chapati, Oatmeal, Muesli, Hash Brown, Corn Flakes, Boiled Eggs, Omelet, Scrambled eggs, and Hot Drinks like Tea, coffee, hot lemon, etc.
  • Lunch and Dinner: Noodles, Momos, Daal Bhat, Plain Rice, Vegetable Curry, Spring Roll, Macaroni, Spaghetti, Sandwiches, Potato Dishes, Steaks, Burgers, Pizza, Sherpa Stew, Soup, etc.

Regarding the drinking water, every teahouse sells mineral water or filtered water at an extra cost. We suggest our clients buy thermos or camelback water bottles and fill them at teahouses. It costs somewhere between $2-5 per fill-up.

Teahouse Accommodation in the Everest Region

Accommodation throughout the 3 passes trek is a basic teahouse. They have typical 2-4 single beds providing warm blankets, pillows, and mattresses. In higher altitudes, they have shared bathrooms and toiled as attached rooms are hard to find. During the trip, our guide will make sure that you will be provided best available teahouse to spend an overnight. It’s important to know that the facilities in the teahouses depend on the season and location as well. In remote areas like Gorakshep, Dzongla, Gokyo, etc. the teahouses are very basic with limited facilities.

Altitude sickness possibilities while crossing three passes

It is not a surprise if you experience altitude sickness while Trekking to the high passes like Renjo La Pass, Cho La Pass, and Kongma La Pass. Visitors may feel severe headaches, vomiting, lack of breath, dizziness, nausea, and loss of appetite. Even trekkers with past trekking experience in high altitudes can experience this Acute Mountain Sickness. Therefore, we suggest taking enough rest days before climbing to high altitude. Likewise, drinking plenty of water, slow walking, eating nutritious meals, adequate preparation & trekking gear, etc. are some of the measures to prevent sickness. In case of an emergency, you need to be evacuated in a Helicopter and taken to the hospital directly.

Electricity and Internet service

Throughout the Everest Trekking Teahouses, an electricity facility is available for charging your devices. However, the teahouses will charge you extra cost for charging your gadgets. Now even at Renjo La Pass and Chola Pass, there is a charging point to charge your device. Likewise, for internet access, you can get it from teahouses paying extra money for it. However, it is not reliable and the speed is too slow.
