Himlung Himal – 7000-meter expedition in Nepal

Himlung Himal Expedition is a dream Himalayan journey that takes you to the restricted area of Nar Phu Valley. The Nar Phu Valley lies between two popular trekking regions of Nepal, the Manaslu Region and the Annapurna Region. Himlung Himal was first summited by a Japanese teamin 1992. Since then, it has become the highest success summit peak in Nepal, surpassing other peak climbing efforts. If you have already climbed 6,000-meter peaks like Island Peak or Mera Peak, then the Himlung Himal Expedition is an ideal choice to push your limits and achieve something new.

Located at an elevation of 7126 meters, Himlung Himal is not well known among climbers because it's in the restricted area of the Manaslu Region. The Himlung Himal Expedition is categorized as a moderate-level 7000-meter expedition in Nepal, which is safer from avalanches and less technical. However, climbers shouldn’t underestimate this expedition. Excellent physical condition, mental preparedness, and previous climbing experience are necessary. The climb typically takes around 25-30 days to complete with an experienced climbing team from Overland Trek Nepal.

Climb the Remote Himalayas of Nar Phu

The Himlung Himal Expedition takes you into one of the less-explored trekking and climbing routes of Nepal, the sacred Nar Phu Valley, nestled between the Annapurna and Manaslu ranges. Rising to an elevation of 7,126 meters, Himlung Himal is a hidden gem perfect for climbers seeking a technically moderate peak in a remote Himalayan setting. Unlike other peaks like Island Peak or Mera Peak, Himlung offers a genuine wilderness experience far from the crowded trails.

Located near the Tibetan border, the journey to Himlung begins with a scenic drive to Koto and a trek through the medieval villages of Nar and Phu. These settlements are rich in Tibetan Buddhist culture and offer mesmerizing views of peaks such as Kang Guru, Annapurna II, and Bhrikuti. The trail is raw, mystical, and untouched—ideal for those yearning for a quiet yet epic climbing adventure.

The Nar Phu Himlung route is still under the radar, making it perfect for high-altitude climbers who want solitude and a more immersive nature. You'll pass through alpine pastures, yak herding camps, prayer-flag-draped passes, and glaciers, experiencing the spiritual heartbeat of the Himalayas. This expedition is a perfect blend of mountaineering challenge and cultural revelation.

Duration of the Himlung Himal Expedition in Nepal

The standard Himlung Himal expedition duration ranges from 28 to 35 days. This includes trek-in days, acclimatization periods, climbing preparation, summit rotation, and return journey. A well-planned itinerary is crucial for safe altitude gain and summit success.

Your journey begins with a drive from Kathmandu to Koto, followed by a multi-day trek through Nar and Phu Valley, with acclimatization stops at Meta, Kyang, and Phu Gaon. These days are essential to adapt your body to the altitude and prepare for higher elevation at Base Camp (4,900m), which is usually reached around Day 10–12.

Climbers generally spend 10–12 days above base camp, setting up Camp I (5,450m), Camp II (6,000m), and a high Camp III (6,350m) before the summit push. Weather windows and acclimatization dictate summit success, so having buffer days is essential.

After the summit, the descent follows the same trail back to Koto and finally returns to Kathmandu. Overland Trek Nepal’s itinerary includes proper rest, high-altitude acclimatization, and contingency days to ensure both safety and success for climbers.

Climbing the route of Himlung Himal with a map

The route was followed last year by a team from Overland Trek Nepal, completing the Himlung Himal Expedition. They did the climb within 27 days following the Himlung Himal Itinerary. However, the Hilming Himal Expedition Itinerary ranges from 25-30 days. The journey begins from Kathmandu to Koto via Besisahar, initially following the trail of the Tsum Valley Trek. You will trek up to Phu Village through Meta, Chyaku, and Kyang. Explore the village of Phu, where you can visit the ancient Tashi Monastery.

The Himlung Himal route continues from Phu Gaon to the Himlung Himal Base Camp. Now, the real adventure begins, as you will start pre-climb training and strategizing to reach the summit. Our experienced climbing guide from Overland Trek Nepal will provide you with pre-climbing training and preparation. Next, you will proceed from the Base Camp to Camp I (5450m) and Camp II (6000 m). Rotation is essential for further climbing and acclimatization.

After completing the rotation, the route continues toward the final summit push. First, reach Summit Camp III at 6250 meters, the last camp before the summit. Begin climbing from Camp III early in the morning, crossing the icy ridge and terrain. The top of Himlung Himal at 7126 meters offers stunning views of the Manaslu and Annapurna ranges. After celebrating a successful climb, descend to Base Camp. Finally, the Himlung Himal Expedition Route Map retraces the same route via Phu Village and back to Kathmandu.

What is the difficulty level of Himlung Himal?

Compared to other massive Himalayan peaks like Everest or Manaslu, Himlung Himal is considered less technically demanding. However, climbers need experience in rock climbing with gear such as fixed ropes and ice axes. The final summit is particularly challenging, requiring navigation over glaciers, icy ridges, and steep rocks. Climbers must be physically flexible and fit to handle these difficulties. Additionally, acclimatization is crucial to prevent sickness and physical issues. Spending several days at Base Camp with proper acclimatization will greatly increase your chances of a successful summit.

Travel Insurance Requirement for the Expedition in Nepal

Travel Insurance is one of the most important documents while participating in the Himlung Himal Climb. Moreover, NMA (Nepal Mountaineering Association) will also ask for the insurance before issuing the climbing permits. The insurance must cover medical bills, injuries, helicopter evacuations, trip cancellations, and other losses. Climbing Himlung Himal is an adventurous trip that involves risky activities. Hence, your insurance should know about the activity you are going to take part in. Travel Insurance is specifically important in remote and rugged terrain while engaging in trekking and climbing activities.

Responsible Tourism during the Peak Climbing in Nepal

During the Himlung Himal Climb, our team is aware of several tourism activities. Considering this fact, we have a motto of leaving only footprints behind during any trips all over Nepal. We always provide our clients regarding the preservation of our Nepalese culture and nature throughout the journey. Travelers must follow the guidelines of the Restricted Region, Like Manaslu and Tsum, during the trekking and climbing. Even at the base camps and high camps, you must deposit the garbage from your side to preserve Mother Nature at high altitude.

Best Time to Climb Himlung Himal

The best time to climb Himlung Himal is during the pre-monsoon (spring) and post-monsoon (autumn) seasons. Specifically, April to early June and late September to November offer the most stable weather conditions for successful summit attempts.

In spring, the snowpack is more stable, and temperatures are slightly warmer, making it ideal to navigate the glaciers. The region blossoms with wildflowers, and the trails are more vibrant. Autumn, on the other hand, offers crystal-clear skies, drier conditions, and incredible panoramic views of the Annapurna and Manaslu ranges.

Monsoon season (June–August) brings heavy rain, increased avalanche risk, and landslides on the approach trail. Winter (December–February) is extremely harsh, with sub-zero temperatures and stormy weather above base camp, making climbing risky.

Meals during the Himlung Expedition

Nutrition is critical when you're pushing your limits at 7,000 meters. During the Himlung Himal Expedition, meals are carefully planned to offer high energy, balanced nutrients, and easy digestibility at altitude.

In Kathmandu and during the lower trekking days through Nar and Phu, you'll enjoy traditional Nepali dal bhat, Tibetan momos, soups, and Western options like pasta, rice, and eggs. You will find a wide range of meal items in the menu of the teahouses in the Tsum Valley Trekking Route.

Once at base camp and higher, Overland Trek Nepal’s expedition cook team prepares high-calorie meals such as porridge, pasta, mashed potatoes, dehydrated fruits, noodles, and protein-packed soups. Remember, in the tent camping, the meals are mostly canned food, soups, pasta, and noodles.

Hydration is equally important. You’ll be served ample hot drinks, including herbal tea, ginger-lemon-honey, coffee, and rehydration solutions. The water in the high camp is provided by melting the snow, which is okay to drink.

Carrying energy bars, nuts, and chocolate as personal snacks is encouraged for the higher camps, where your body burns thousands of calories during summit rotation. Our meals are designed not just for nourishment, but for comfort, morale, and performance.

Accommodation and Camping along the Himlung Himal Route

Accommodation during the Himlung Himal Expedition is a mix of teahouse stays and high-altitude tented camping. The approach trail through Nar Phu Valley offers modest but welcoming teahouses in villages like Meta, Kyang, and Phu. Local families run these teahouses, providing simple rooms with shared bathrooms, warm meals, and cozy dining halls that are perfect for acclimatization and cultural immersion.

As you ascend beyond Phu village toward Himlung Base Camp, the landscape becomes wilder, and camping becomes essential. Overland Trek Nepal sets up high-quality expedition tents, including sleeping tents, kitchen tents, dining tents, and toilet tents, ensuring comfort and hygiene even in the rugged alpine zone.

At Base Camp (4,900m) and higher camps (Camp I, II, and III), our staff will manage all logistics: setting up insulated sleeping arrangements, preparing high-calorie meals, and establishing climbing routes. We use alpine-grade four-season tents and provide foam or inflatable sleeping pads for warmth.

Overland Trek Nepal ensures the highest safety and comfort standards for all climbers. Our Himlung Himal camping experience is not just survival, it’s a well-managed adventure under the stars.

Tips and Preparation for the Himlung Himal Expedition

Proper preparation is the foundation of a successful Himlung Himal climb. This peak demands a strong mix of cardiovascular fitness, endurance, mental resilience, and basic mountaineering skills. Here are key preparation tips:

  • Physical Conditioning: Train 3–4 months in advance with endurance hikes, stair climbing, strength workouts, and cardio. Focus on long hikes with backpacks and elevation gain.
  • High-Altitude Acclimatization: Spend time on high-altitude treks (above 4,000m) beforehand. The Tsum Valley Trek is itself a nice way to prepare for your climb.
  • Technical Skills: Basic rope work, crampon walking, and using an ice axe are required. Join a pre-expedition mountaineering course or climb lower peaks like Island Peak or Lobuche East for practice.
  • Gear Familiarity: Train with your gear, boots, crampons, harness, and headlamp, before the expedition.

Mental stamina is equally vital. Be ready for tough weather, altitude effects, and the physical demands of the climb. Choose a team with solid backup, like Overland Trek Nepal, and your chances of summiting Himlung rise significantly.

Permit Card Requirement to climb Himlung Himal

Being close to the Tibetan border and situated in a restricted zone, the Himlung Himal climb requires multiple permits. These include:

  • Climbing Permit for Himlung Himal issued by the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA)
  • Restricted Area Permit (RAP) for Nar Phu Valley
  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)
  • TIMS Card (Trekkers’ Information Management System)

Permit prices vary seasonally, but as of now, the Himlung climbing permit alone costs USD 500 in spring and USD 250 in autumn. Restricted area permits require a minimum of two trekkers and a government-licensed guide, which is why booking through a registered company like Overland Trek Nepal is mandatory.

We handle all paperwork and logistics, so you can focus entirely on the climb. Permit regulations are strictly enforced in this region; missing one can result in fines or denial of entry.

How to Deal with Altitude Sickness While Climbing the Himlung Himal?

Altitude sickness, or Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), is a critical concern during the Himlung Himal Expedition, especially since the peak exceeds 7,000 meters. Proper acclimatization, hydration, and awareness are key to avoiding life-threatening conditions like HAPE or HACE.

Here’s how to manage altitude effectively:

  • Ascend Gradually: Our itinerary is designed with slow altitude gain and rest days at key points like Phu and Himlung Himal Base Camp.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drink 4–5 liters daily. Dehydration increases AMS risk.
  • Use Diamox (Acetazolamide): Start preventive doses after crossing 3,500m if advised by your doctor.
  • Recognize Symptoms: Headache, nausea, insomnia, and dizziness are early signs. Never ignore them.
  • Descend if Needed: If symptoms worsen, descent is the only cure. Overland Trek Nepal’s guides are trained to make these calls immediately.

Our team carries a Gamow Bag (portable altitude chamber) and oxygen supplies for emergencies. Climbing Himlung is as much about listening to your body as it is about grit and determination.
