Brief of Gokyo Valley Trek

Gokyo Valley Trek is an excellent journey through the Sagarmatha National Park, a less-crowded trekking trail in the Khumbu Region. Trekking to Gokyo Valley in Nepal has been in many travelers' eyes lately. This trek is a great alternative if you want to avoid the packed Everest Trekking Route. Also known as Gokyo Ri Trek (5357) strolling around the Gokyo Valley around the bank of Lakes is a mesmerizing experience. Taking 12-14 days to complete, the journey to Gokyo requires a decent physical state. Any trekking experience beforehand this trek can easily complete this trek. However, for novice trekkers can be challenging at some point.

This 14-day Gokyo Valley Trek is an off-the-beaten-path trek inEverest, passing through a rugged trail and offering constant views of mountains. After the EBC Hike, the Gokyo Ri Trek is another famous trekking route in the Everest Region. Just 3-4 days away from the gateway of the Everest Region, Namche Bazaar, a voyage to Gokyo Valley delivers once-in-a-lifetime views of glittering Gokyo Lakes, glaciers, snowcapped peaks, and rugged landscapes. Beyond the lakes and mountains, engaging with the local people of the Everest Region delivers a unique experience of Himalayan Buddhism and their lifestyle.

What makes Gokyo Valley Famous?

Gokyo Valley is magical in the middle of famous mountain peaks, landscapes, and glacial lakes. Likewise, in comparison to the classic Everest Base Camp Trek, only a few visitors hike to Gokyo Valley. It makes the pathway more peaceful and quieter than that of the EBC route. Likewise, the valley will take you to the Gokyo Ri at 5357 meters which delivers outstanding views of snowcapped peaks and landscapes. Wonder, apart from the gigantic peaks and glaciers, admiring the glimpse of Himalayan wildlife through the Sagarmatha National Park.

Hike to Gokyo Ri to See Magical Mountains and Lakes.

From the Valley, the Hike to Gokyo Ritakes around 2-3 hours to complete a round trip covering around 3 KM. The valley itself offers views of Gokyo Lakes. Hiking to Gokyo Ri delivers incredible sights of lakes and valleys at the base of gigantic peaks. Mountains such as Mt. Everest, Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Nuptse, Island Peak, Pumori, Cholatse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu can be seen from the top of the Gokyo Ri.

Trek to Everest Base Camp with Gokyo Valley

If you have enough Time in Nepal for the Gokyo Ri Trek, then extend your trip to the Everest Base Camp Trek with Gokyo Valley. Embark on these adventures in the Everest Region and explore Gokyo Valley, Gokyo Lakes, Everest Base Camp, and Kala Patthar at the same time. Likewise, during the Everest Three High Passes Trek, you will pass through the Gokyo Valley en route. Hence, the Voyage to Gokyo has several alternatives for those people who are seeking Himalayan adventure.

14-Day Gokyo Valley Trek Itinerary Overview

Often the trip to Everest Region begins with the flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. Same with this trekking to Gokyo Valley in Nepal as well. With a 35-minute flight to Lukla, it follows the EBC Trek Route until Namche Bazaar. The trail splits from Namche and takes the route towards Dole and Macchermo, eventually reaching Gokyo Valley. If you do Gokyo Valley with Everest Base Camp Trek, the trail continues to EBC. Upon reaching Gokyo Valley, the trail will lead to Gokyo Ri to admire superb views of vistas like Mt. Everest, Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Nuptse, Pumori, etc. However, this journey to Gokyo will return through the same trail via Macchermo, Dole, Namche, and Lukla, and ends at Kathmandu.

Gokyo Trekking Cost 2025, 2026

The Gokyo Valley Trek cost for the inclusive package ranges from $1499 to $1699 depending on the service, accommodation, number of pax, guide fee, porter fee, etc. Likewise, it also includes the three meals during the trek. Just like other trekking routes in Everest, the trek to Gokyo Ri also covers the Kathmandu-Lukla-Kathmandu round trip airfare.

Responsible Tourism during the Gokyo Trek

During the Gokyo Valley Trekking, our team is aware of several tourism activities. Considering this fact, we have a motto of leaving only footprints behind during any trips all over Nepal. We always provide to our clients regarding the preservation of our Nepalese culture and nature throughout the journey. Travelers must follow the guidelines of Sagarmatha National Park during the trek in the Everest Region. Moreover, enjoying and respecting the local Sherpa Culture promotes the beauty of cultural harmony.

Required Travel Insurance

Prioritizing your safety in high altitudes like Everest Region is very important. The uncertainty of weather, injury, risky trail, and altitude sickness can be a concern during the EBC Trek. Hence, having good travel insurance can boost your morale throughout the journey. We recommend having quality travel insurance that covers your medical bills, loss, damages, helicopter rescue, and all kinds of accidents above 5000 meters.

What if the Lukla Flight is delayed during the Gokyo Trek?

The 14-day Gokyo Valley Trek starts and ends at Lukla with exciting flights to get there. The weather in the Khumbu Region is always unpredictable. Hence, there can be flight delays and cancellations as well if the weather is not favorable for the flight. Therefore, we request our clients to have extra days for their trek, especially to the Everest Region including the Gokyo Ri Trek. In case of a flight cancellation, your flight will be postponed for the next day or you can get the full refund.

Which permit card is required for the Gokyo Valley?

Similar to EBC Trekking, you must obtain a permit card to do this Gokyo Valley Trekking. Gokyo Trek needs a Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit and a Khumbu Region Municipality Permit Card. Each of the Permit Cards costs $30 respectively to trek in the Khumbu Region. To issue these Everest Permit Cards, we need your passport and a copy of your photo beforehand of the trek.

Almost all teahouses have internet facilities with some extra cost. They provide these facilities with an extra cost per device. Likewise, it is the same with the electricity facilities as well. Charging your mobile devices or backups costs an extra toll ranging from $2-$5 per device.

Difficulty Level of Hike to Gokyo Ri and preparation for the trek

The Gokyo Valley Trekking goes past several remote villages and rugged trails. Likewise, the route is off-the-beaten with several steep slopes and a glacial path. Hence, the journey demands excellent physical fitness for these challenging pathways. Likewise, the sudden weather changes and remote valleys can make the trip more strenuous. However, for experienced travelers in high altitudes, this trek can be moderate to easy. On the contrary, novice trekkers may find this trek physically and mentally demanding.

So, how do you prepare for this trek in the Everest Region? First, do some cardio and endurance training for at least 6-7 weeks before the trek. Likewise, hiking at least 2 times a week at high altitudes can be beneficial. Moreover, choosing the right trekking agency, the perfect season, travel insurance, etc. plays an important role in your trekking preparation.

What if I get altitude sickness during the Gokyo Lake Trek?

Well, altitude sickness is very common after an elevation of 3500 meters. However, after feeling the symptoms, you must use preventive measures before it gets worse. First thing first, inform your trekking guide and fellow member if you start getting symptoms like headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and lack of appetite. These types of common symptoms can be gotten rid of if you follow the measures mentioned below:

  • Drink Plenty of liquids such as water and vegetable soups.
  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine during the whole journey.
  • Eat healthy meals such as vegetable soups, Daal Bhat, and other veg items.
