  • Explore the beauty of Annapurna, Manaslu, Dhaulagiri, and other ranges.

  • Diverse landscapes and the vegetation of the restricted region.

Nar Phu Valley Trekking with Kang La Pass

Nar Phu Valley Trek is a less-crowded trekking area in Nepal that opened only to foreigners in 2003. Located just beyond the Annapurna Circuit Trekking Trail, Nar and Phu are two distinctive villages dominated by Tibetan Refugees (Khampas People). Though the route is easily accessible compared to other popular treks in Nepal, like the Manaslu Circuit Trekking, it is a hidden gem and a less visited area by nomads.

The venture to Nar Phu Valley allows us to explore the typical remote villages and Himalayan lifestyle influenced by the Tibetan community. This virgin trekking route takes you to the highest point of Kang La Pass (5200m), making the journey more challenging and demanding. Yet the views from the top of the Kang La Pass are awe-inspiring. Moreover, this journey is more about discovering the new places of Nepal hidden inside the Great Himalayas.

Though it is graded as a challenging hike, one must possess excellent mental endurance and physical state. This 12-day Nar Phu Valley Trek often goes through the isolated and less-explored area of Nar and Phu Valleys which involves dramatic landscapes and rocky trails. Hence, it requires top effort to hike through the trail of these isolated valleys.

Let Overland Trek Nepal guide you through the Pathway of Nar Phu Valley Trek Route and tell you the stories of this amazing valley. Join us for this incredible outdoor trip to Nar Phu Valley, where every step brings new horizons. Do you have any queries about this venture? Email or WhatsApp us at +9779851138871 so we can provide enough information regarding this trek.

The Uniqueness of Nar and Phu Village

The Valleys of Nar and Phu stand out for their mixture of isolated trails, culture, terrain, and mountains. Unlike other busy trekking trails in Nepal like Everest Base Camp Trek, the Pathway of Nar Phu Valley is isolated. Hiking through the trails of this route feels like wandering into a different world. Likewise, the villages of this area are rich in Tibetan Culture. Encounter with several small settlements habited by the Tibetan Influenced people and witness performing their unique rituals.

Next, the landscapes during this journey are dramatic delivering the perspective of high cliffs, narrow canyons, terrains, and mountains. Likewise, the ancient monasteries, prayer wheels, architecture, and gumbas are equally inspiring. Those who are wildlife enthusiasts can get most of this trek as the valley is filled with elusive mountain wild animals and vegetation.

Is Nar Phu Valley Trek a restricted route in Nepal?

The trekking route of Nar and Phu is restricted as it lies near the Tibetan Border. Commence off your trip by hopping onto the public bus to Besisahar and sharing a jeep to Koto. From here, the hike moves ahead to Meta and Phu Gaun. Spending an extra night in Phu Gau allows you to learn more about this village as well as acclimatize your body.

Trek continues to Nar Village now, crossing the difficult trail through the Phu Khola and Lase Khola. En route, the journey allows you to explore monasteries and cross through the barren landscapes. Another great challenge lies ahead, the Kang La Pass at 5200 meters before descending to Ngawal to conclude the trip. Lastly, from Ngawal making your way to Besisahar, you will drive back to Kathmandu. During this entire trip, travelers need to have a restricted permit card due to its regulations and restrictions.

Discover Nar Phu Valley with the Annapurna Circuit Trek

Do you know Nar Phu Valley Trek can be combined with the Annapurna Circuit Trek? Yes, you read it right, those who are seeking extra adventure can combine both of these treks and visit two of the best treks in Nepal at once. From Manang, hike through Yak Kharka, Thorang Phedi, and cross the highest pass of Nepal Thorang La Pass at 5416 meters. Lastly, ending the trip on a high note by flying from Jomsom to Pokhara with an aerial view of the Annapurna Himalayas. If you want to do it online go through the website of the Immigration Department of Nepal. Ensure that your passport has at least 6 months of validation. If you are planning to get it at Kathmandu airport, carry a copy of your passport-size photo. The visa fees in Nepal are:

  • 15-day visa costs $30
  • 30-day visa Costs $45
  • 90-day visa Costs $125

Travel Insurance for the trek to Nar Phu Village

Any adventure activities in Nepal including Trekking need good travel insurance. For the trek to Nar Phu Valley, you need a lot of strength and effort which can lead to illness or injuries anytime. Hence, travel insurance is necessary to cover medical expenses, rescue operations, transportation, etc. Likewise, it is useful for a trip cancellation or interruption. However, while choosing the travel insurance read the terms and conditions properly and ensure it covers all the necessary policies you require for this trek to Nar Phu.

Responsible Tourism

Generally, while operating tourism activities like trekking in Nepal, Peak Climbing in Nepal, Tours in Nepal, etc. we always follow the responsible tourism policy. During the trek, we advise our clients to reuse and recycle the product accordingly. Moreover, respect the culture and traditions of the local areas of the Nar and Phu Villages. Also, please follow the guidelines of the restricted area to avoid fines and penalties. In case you are not aware of any rules or regulations feel free to ask with your guide. He will inform you about the things you can do or not during the whole trip. The best way to respect the culture of the locals is to greet them by doing Namaste, wearing modest clothes while visiting monasteries, enjoying their dishes, etc.

Which is the best season to travel to Nar Phu Village?

The best seasons to travel to Nar Phu are spring and autumn. These two seasons have the most reliable weather conditions, with clear blue skies and excellent visibility of mountains. In the spring months, vegetation and flowers like rhododendrons start to bloom. The daytime temperature in spring is perfect for hiking. Likewise, during the autumn months, days are bright and sunny, with nights being chilly. Also, in the monsoon season due to its remoteness, rainfall is very hard to receive. If you can combat the rainfall in the lower part, trekking in the high altitude of Nar and Phu Valley rewards you with excellent views.

Do I need a permit card to visit Nar Phu Valley Trekking?

Trekkers need special permission from the Nepal Government to enter the restricted area of Nar Phu Valley. Also, the interesting fact about this trek is no solo trekkers can get a permit card from the immigration department. Obtain a Special Restricted Area Permit Card, which costs USD 75per person from December to August for the first 7 days; you have to add USD 15 per day after the 8th Day. Likewise, from September to November, it costs USD 100 for the first week, then after 7 days, pay an additional USD 15 per day. Besides this, the Annapurna Conservation Area Project Permit Card which costs USD 25, and the Trekkers Information Management System permit which costs USD 16 are needed.

Packing List to carry for Nar Phu Trek

The packing list for the Nar Phu Trek is somewhat identical to the other trekking in Nepal. However, it depends on the season you travel as well. Maybe you need to adjust some of the gear based on the time you trek. Here are the most common and essential gear you need to carry during the trek in Nepal:

  • General Trekking Gear: Trekking Pole, Backpack, Duffel Bag (provided by us), Sleeping Bag
  • Upper Body clothing: Sun Hat, Woolen Hat, Gloves, Thermal Layers, Long Sleeve T-shirts, Down Jacket, Windproof Jacket, etc.
  • Lower Body Clothing: Trekking Pants, Thermal Inner, Shorts for Day Hikes, Warm Trousers, Woolen Socks, Hiking Boots, Flip Flops, etc.
  • Miscellaneous Gear: First Aid, Toiletries, Skin Care, Water Purification Tablet, Battery, Extra Charger, Power Banks, Nepalese Currency, etc.

What is like accommodation in the Nar and Phu Village?

The accommodation type during this entire journey is a Teahouse, where you will have to share a room with other trekkers during the peak season. Although you may find a private attached room at some part of the Nar and Phu village. The teahouses are very basic with twin beds, mattresses, pillows, and blankets. However, do not expect the luxury amenities in the higher altitudes as the valleys of Nar and Phu are very isolated just like the Tsum Valley of Nepal. Also, at some places if available you can spend nights in a homestay as well.

However, the electricity, Wi-Fi, and Hot shower facilities are available in a limited edition. In the higher altitude, the electricity is directly from the Solar Panel and to use it for charging your devices you need to pay an extra amount for it. Likewise, the same for the Wi-Fi and the hot shower. Each of these facilities costs somewhere between USD 2-5 per person depending on the altitude. These kinds of extra expenses are not part of the Nar Phu Valley Trekking Package.

Food and water on Nar Phu Trek

During your stay in the teahouse of Nar Phu Valley, you will be served an organic but limited range of cuisine. You can choose one main course for each meal, breakfast, lunch, or dinner, from the menu. Due to its remoteness, the range of meal items is very limited in this region. However, teahouses offer the best available food that is required to fuel you up for the high-altitude trek. Here are the common foods available along the Nar Phu Valley Trek Route:

  • Breakfast: Tea, Coffee, Porridge, Muesli, Omelet, Chapati, Bread, Hash Brown, boiled eggs, etc.
  • Lunch and Dinner: Daal Bhat, Plain rice, Vegetable Curry, Fried rice, Mo Mo, Chow Mein, Thenduk, Spring Roll, Pizza, Roti, Thukpa, etc.

About the drinking water, it is available in the teahouses or shops. However, we always focus on responsible tourism and plastic plastic-free environment. Hence, we suggest carrying a bottle with you so that you can buy boiled or filtered water from the tea shops. Also, if you want to use the water directly from the spring, better to carry a water purification tablet with you.

Hiring a guide and porter for Nar Phu Trek is Essential

You may be still confused if you have to hire a guide during the trek in Nepal. Yes, you must hire a guide if you are trekking in the high altitude of Nepal including Nar Phu Valley. It may be hectic for you to find the best trekking guide in Nepal who can lead you to this restricted area of Nar Phu Valley.Overland Trek Nepal provides you with an experienced and well-trained trekking guide who has been to this region several times.

Likewise, Porter is an equally important part of this venture. Our experienced porter who can carry up to 20 kg of bag of 2 trekkers helps you in making your trip easier. Both the guide and porter are good companion who helps you in navigating the trail as well as give you a helping hand when you are in crisis.

How difficult is it to cross the Kang La Pass?

Well, all together the trek is moderately challenging. However, crossing the Kang La Pass can be tricky and strenuous due to its high altitude of 5320 meters. Besides that, altitude sickness, rugged pathways, the distance of the trek, remoteness, etc. are another factor that makes this trek difficult. Nomads who have experience of high altitude climbing may find the journey somewhat easy. That is why, training and preparation are so important for this trek. Participating in day hikes, physical exercises, meditations, hitting the gym, etc. can help physically and mentally.

Altitude sickness and remedies to follow during the Nar Phu Journey

Altitude sickness can be one of the major problems during this trip if you are not well prepared. Often trekkers suffer from this sickness after crossing 3000 meters. Generally, it happens when there is a low level of oxygen at a high altitude. Dizziness, Nausea, headache, loss of appetite, insomnia, vomiting, lack of vision, etc. are the common symptoms of this sickness. So, how to avoid it during the trip?

  • Do not rush to reach the destination.
  • Acclimatize properly and keep your body moving during your rest days in the itinerary.
  • Drink plenty of water including soups like Garlic soup, Ginger Soup, etc.
  • Include vegetarian and nutritious meal items in your food.
  • Ensure you do not consume caffeine or alcoholic products during the entire trip.
  • If the sickness gets worse, descend to a lower elevation or ask for the helicopter charter consulting with your insurance.
