Helambu Trek is one of the nearest treks around Kathmandu, starting just 20 km away. Situated in the Sindupalchok district, this trek is a perfect option for those short on time but want to experience stunning natural scenery and the local culture.

The Helambu Circuit trek is a short trek near Kathmandu in the Langtang Region which takes you to the culturally enriched valley of Helambu Valley at 3690 meters, the home of the Hyolmo people. The trail along the Tamang and Sherpa Villages of the Helambu Region offers Tibetan-style Buddhist monasteries, shrines, and stupas relishing their culture and lifestyle.

Along with its cultural significance, the Helambu Circuit trek also offers stunning landscapes and views of mountain peaks, including Jugal Himal (6095 m), Gauri Shanker (7,145m), Dorje Lakpa (6,988m), Ganesh Himal (7,406m), and Langtang Lirung (7,246m).

Also known as the Helambu Bird Watching Trek, this area has more than 300 species of birds, so it’s a paradise for bird watchers. Just like Langtang Valley Trekking, this journey to Helambu is suitable for all age groups of people. Therefore, this trek to Helambu is one of the short-duration, less crowded, and moderately difficult trek in the Langtang region which blends the rich culture with natural beauty.

Helambu Trek route map

Starting from Kathmandu in the early morning, the trek starts with the scenic 1-hour drive to Sundarijal from where the actual trek begins. The trek starts following the gentle ascend through the forest of Shivapuri National Park passing the waterfall, watershed, and beautiful Tamang settlement Mulkhara. Following the ascend, the trail heads to Chispani where you can witness stunning sunrise and sunset along the beautiful panoramic mountain views.

From Chisapani, the trek follows the trail along the terrace farms and small rural villages to Kutumsang. Following the route along the rhododendron forest, the trek takes you to Tharepati elevated at 3690m, the highest point of the trek. Tharepati offers breathtaking views of diverse landscapes and mountain peaks including Jugal Himal (6095 m), Gauri Shanker (7,145m), Dorje Lakpa (6,988m), Ganesh Himal (7,406m), and Langtang Lirung (7,246m).

Leaving Tharepati, the trail descends towards Melamchi where you’ll cross the suspension bridge and start an uphill climb toward Tarkegyang, a major settlement in the Helambhu region. This village offers a unique blend of natural landscapes and rich sherpa culture. On the final day of the Helambu Trek Itinerary, take a scenic drive from Sermathang through the countryside roads and terrace farmlands passing via Melamchi Bazaar and Sankhu to reach Kathmandu.

Can I combine Helambu with Langtang Valley Trek?

Honestly, combining Langtang Valley Trek with Helambu is more worth it than the Helambu Trek alone. This is because Langtang Valley delivers more of the mountain views and nature from a closer distance. While combining the Helambu with Langtang Valley, the highest elevation will be at 4985 meters during the Hike to Tserko Ri. This viewpoint delivers a magnificent perspective of the Himalayas like Langtang Lirung and Langtang Ri from a near distance. Likewise, it is an excellent opportunity to experience Hyolmo and Tamang culture during the same trip.

Helambu Trek Cost for 2024/25

Helambu Circuit Trek costs around $800, depending on several aspects like customized itinerary, meals, accommodation, transportation, permits, and government taxes.
