Brief of Tilicho Lake Trek - 9 Days

Tilicho Lake Trek is an adventurous journey through the Annapurna Circuit to the world’s highest-altitude lake Tilicho Lake at 4919 meters. This hidden Lake in the Annapurna Region is formed by the icy slope of the Annapurna Ranges and Thorang Peak. As a part of the Annapurna Circuit Trek route, most of the trekkers visit Tilicho Lake as a part of acclimatization before crossing the Thorang La Pass at 5416 meters.

Beautifully located in the Annapurna Region, the journey delivers astounding views of sparkling mountains like Annapurna, Himchuli, Nilgiri, and Mt. Fishtail. Likewise, the dazzling views of sparkling Tilicho Lake just underneath the dazzling mountains are magical. The journey to Tilicho Lake is less strenuous in comparison to Annapurna Circuit Trek or EBC Trek. Furthermore, it is 7-10 days of the trek based on the customized Tilicho Lake Itinerary. Hence, beginners or even experienced travelers can visit Tilicho Lake and experience the beauty of the Annapurna Region at the same time.

Tilicho Trek Itinerary and Route Overview

The trek to Tilicho Lake starts from Kathmandu driving through the Prithivi Highway alongside the Trisuli River to Dumbre. From here, leaving the Prithivi Highway, the journey follows the roads that lead to Besisahar, a small town in Lamjung. Continuing onward, the jeep drive reaches Dharapani- a key junction to the popular Annapurna Circuit Trek and Manaslu Circuit Trek where all your trekking permits are checked. The drive continues through the bumpy roads alongside the Marsyandi Rive to Chame from where your actual trek starts.

From Chame, the trek follows the same route as the Annapurna Circuit Trek which passes through the charming villages of Pisang, Ngawal, and Bhrakha before reaching the Manang village. Along the way, you’ll be treated to spectacular mountain views such as Annapurna II, Annapurna IV, Ghagapurna, Pisang Peak, Dhaulagiri, and Lamjung Himal.

Acclimatize yourself in beautiful Manang Village by embarking on short hikes like Gangapurna Lake, Ice Lake, and Milarepa’s Cave. Following the acclimatization in Manang, the trail leaves the Annapurna Circuit Trekking route and turns left towards the Tilicho Base Camp. The trekking route passes through the villages of Khangsar and Shree Kharka offering magnificent views of diverse landscapes with constant mountain views.

The following day an early morning hike through the high Himalayan pastures to the ultimate Tilicho Lake at 4919 m. Here, you’ll be rewarded with awe-inspiring views of Crystal-Clear Lake surrounded by soaring peaks.

After immersing yourself in the beauty of Tilicho Lake, trek back the same way to Tilicho Base Camp and then to Shree Kharka. The trek continues towards the Manang Village for a jeep drive through the Pisang, Chame, Dharapani that leads to Besisahar. From Besisahar, the 7-8 hours scenic drive to Kathmandu bids farewell to the memorable journey of Tilicho Lake.

Best season time to Visit Tilicho Lake

Spring and autumn are the ideal seasons to do the Tilicho Lake Trek. The best time to do this trek in the Annapurna Region is from October to November in the fall and March to April in the spring. During these seasons, the weather is ideal for trekking, with breathtaking views of snow-capped mountains and stunning natural landscapes.

However, this trek can be completed during the winter (December-February) and monsoon (June-August) seasons, though there are some risks to consider. Tilicho Trek is a high-altitude trek above 4000 meters that experiences extreme cold and snowfall during the winter. The monsoon season adds the risk of landslides, especially along the trail from Khangsar to Tilicho Base Camp.

Embark on the Annapurna Circuit Trek with the Tilicho Lake

Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake Trek can be combined as both routes lie within the Annapurna region. The first half of the trail to Manang is the same for both treks. Most trekkers combine these treks, allowing them to see the pristine beauty of Tilicho Lake at 4919 m and cross the world's highest pass, Thorong La Pass, which stands at 5416 m. If you have time while in Nepal, consider combining the Annapurna Circuit with the Tilicho Lake Trek, which takes about 15 to 20 days and offers an unparalleled trekking experience in Nepal's Himalayas.

Tilicho Lake Trek difficulty

Tilicho Lake Trek is considered a moderate level of difficulty. This high-altitude trekking in the Annapurna Region presents unique challenges due to the high altitude and dry atmosphere as most of the trails are above 3500 m.

Altitude is the main factor during this trek as Tilicho Lake is elevated at 4919 m above sea level. Otherwise, with decent physical condition, mental preparation, initial preparation, and effective acclimatization you can accomplish the Tilicho trek.

Altitude Sickness and Preventive Measures during Tilicho Lake Trek

The Tilicho Lake trek is a high-altitude trek in the northern part of the Annapurna Region. Most of the trail is above 3500 m, where the atmosphere is dry, increasing the chances of altitude sickness.

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) or Altitude Sickness presents symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, dizziness, blocked ears, headache, fatigue, loss of appetite, sleeping problems (insomnia), discomfort, and rapid heartbeat. However, the risk can be minimized with proper acclimatization and by following essential precautions such as strolling, consuming soups & staying hydrated.

Acclimatization is the best way to prevent altitude sickness on this trek, as you gain maximum height in a single day. If you acclimatize properly and adapt your body to the local environment, then there is a low chance of altitude sickness. Also, take breaks while walking, do not walk fast, and do not gain height in a short period.

Trek permits and documents are required for the ACAP

Just like the ACT or Annapurna Base Camp Trek, this trek requires an Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP). We need your passport and passport-size photos to obtain these permits. Once you provide us with your documents, Overland Trek Nepal will arrange the permit. The Annapurna Conservation Area Project Permit card fee is NRP 3000.
