Manaslu Circuit Trek Overview

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is one of the top treks in Nepal. It ranks with Everest Base Camp and the Annapurna Circuit. But it gets far fewer tourists.

The trail follows the Budhi Gandaki River. You climb from low green forest to high icy passes. You pass through many old villages. These have temples, prayer wheels, and centuries of Buddhist culture. The trek starts and ends in Kathmandu. The 18-day plan has two rest days for altitude adjustment.

A 14-day option is also available. That is better for experienced trekkers. All trekkers need a licensed guide. Solo trekking is not allowed. This is the law. The Manaslu region borders Tibet. That gives it a unique mix of Nepali and Tibetan culture.

The trail opened to foreign trekkers in 1992. It still feels remote and untouched today.

What Makes the Manaslu Circuit Trek Special in 2026 and 2027?

1. Remote and Less Crowded

The Manaslu Circuit is one of Nepal's quietest big treks. In peak season, it sees a fraction of the visitors that go to Everest or Annapurna.

The trails are clean. The teahouses are calm. You feel close to nature.

2. Real Tibetan Culture

The villages here are home to the Nubri and Tsum people. Their customs come from Tibetan Buddhism. You see this in their temples, food, clothing, and festivals.

This kind of cultural experience is rare on busier routes.

3. The Restricted Area Protects the Trek

Nepal limits the number of trekkers in this region. You need special permits to enter. This keeps the trail in great shape. It also protects local culture and wildlife.

The restrictions are why the Manaslu Circuit is still so special in 2026 and 2027.

4. Larkya La Pass — The Crown of the Trek

Crossing Larkya La Pass is the best moment of the trek. You start before sunrise. The climb is tough. But the views from the top are stunning.

You see Mt. Manaslu, Himlung Himal, Cheo Himal, Kang Guru, and many more peaks.

5. Wildlife in the Manaslu Conservation Area

The Manaslu Conservation Area covers 1,663 sq km. It is home to snow leopards, red pandas, Himalayan tahr, and musk deer.

You may spot wildlife near Birendra Lake and on the high passes.

Manaslu Circuit Trek Difficulty

The trek is rated Moderate to Challenging. No climbing skills are needed. But you must be fit.

Daily Walking Hours

  • Most days: 5 to 7 hours
  • Larkya La Pass day: 8 to 12 hours (the hardest day)
  • Trails are clear and marked on most sections

Altitude

  • Starts at 700 m (Soti Khola). Tops out at 5,106 m (Larkya La Pass).
  • Altitude sickness is a real risk above 3,500 m.
  • Two rest days are built into the 18-day plan to help your body adjust.

Who Can Do the Manaslu Circuit Trek?

  • Fit beginners who have trained for 2 to 3 months
  • Trekkers who have done Everest Base Camp or Annapurna and want a bigger challenge
  • Anyone in good health with no serious heart or lung problems

Fitness Level Required

You should be able to walk 5 to 7 hours a day on rough trails. Train for 8 to 12 weeks before you go. Long hikes with a pack on are the best prep.

Acclimatization — Why It Matters

Your body needs time to adjust to above 3,500 m. Follow the rule: climb high, sleep low. Drink a lot of water. Tell your guide right away if you feel sick or have a headache.

Getting travel insurance is crucial for the Manaslu Trek, one of Nepal's most challenging routes. Having travel insurance offers financial protection and enhances your confidence, helping ensure a safe and enjoyable trekking adventure in eastern Nepal.

Best Time for 18-day Manaslu Circuit Trekking

Autumn (September to November) and spring (March to April) are ideal periods for trekking the Manaslu Circuit. During these seasons, the weather tends to be stable and conducive, providing clear visibility. This allows trekkers to enjoy and capture stunning views of towering mountain peaks, green landscapes, and varied natural scenery, which makes these times particularly favored by adventure enthusiasts.

best weather for Nepal trip

Trekkers who prefer less-crowded trails will find the Manaslu Trek manageable during the winter season (December to February) and the monsoon season (June to August). Although these seasons pose additional challenges, such as extreme cold and heavy rain, with proper caution and preparation, they are ideal times for those seeking fewer crowds.

Altitude sickness during the trekking in the Manaslu

If you're an experienced and frequent hiker, altitude sickness likely isn't an issue. Still, traversing rugged terrain, high passes, and steep trails at high altitudes can be challenging. After crossing 3,000 meters and reaching 5106 meters at Larkya La Pass, there is a risk of developing symptoms. Symptoms of altitude sickness include fatigue, dizziness, vomiting, exhaustion, and impaired vision.

Symptoms of altitude sickness

However, you can prevent this illness by following essential precautions. Proper acclimatisation after reaching 3000 meters altitude is key. Additionally, walking slowly, staying hydrated, eating nutritious meals, and taking other safety measures are beneficial. In severe cases, it is strongly advised to descend to lower elevations. If rescue is needed, Overland Trek Nepal can help coordinate with your insurance provider. Our trekking leader will also monitor your health regularly.

How difficult is the Manaslu Circuit Trekking?

Generally, the Manaslu Circuit Trek is considered the most challenging and remote trekking trail in Nepal. The trek involves untouched natural landscapes and remote villages, including crossing the high-altitude Larkya La Pass at 5106m.

This trek is often not suitable for beginners, with most travellers completing it in 14 days. However, we offer an 18-day Manaslu Circuit Trek suitable for all levels, from beginners to experienced trekkers. Our itinerary includes a 2-day acclimatisation period to prevent altitude sickness before crossing the demanding Larkya La Pass at 95106 meters.

Despite these measures, physical fitness is essential. With steady pacing, proper preparation, and guidance from a licensed guide, fit trekkers can successfully finish the Manaslu Circuit and experience one of Nepal’s most beautiful and less populated trekking routes.

Trekking in the Manaslu region requires several permits for foreigners, except Nepalese citizens. Since the trail is located within the Manaslu Conservation Area, a Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP) is necessary. FAQs

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is an 18-day trekking route in Nepal's Gorkha District. It goes around Mt. Manaslu (8,163 m), the world's 8th highest peak. The route crosses Larkya La Pass at 5,106 m. It is a restricted area trek that needs special permits and a licensed guide.

Both are similar in challenge. Larkya La Pass (5,106 m) is not as high as Everest Base Camp (5,364 m). But the Manaslu Circuit is more remote, has fewer rescue options, and has longer walking days. Acclimatization matters just as much on both routes.

Nepal made the Manaslu region a restricted area to protect its environment and Tibetan-influenced culture. The permit system controls tourism numbers. This keeps the trail clean and funds local conservation. It also creates jobs by requiring licensed local guides.

The best times are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). Spring has blooming flowers and mild temperatures. Autumn has clear skies and great mountain views. Winter is possible but risky. The monsoon season (June to August) is not recommended.

Yes. Most trekkers say it is one of the best hikes they have ever done. It offers remote scenery, real Tibetan culture, wildlife, and the challenge of Larkya La Pass, all with far fewer crowds than Everest or Annapurna. It is a true off-the-beaten-path Himalayan experience.

Yes, trekkers need several permits, including the Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP), Restricted Area Permit (RAP), and the Annapurna Circuit Permit. It's recommended to arrange these through a registered trekking agency.

Yes, a licensed guide is mandatory for Manaslu Circuit Trekking. Since it is a restricted area trek in Nepal, independent trekking is not allowed. Hiring a guide ensures permit compliance, safety, navigation, and a deeper understanding of local culture and landscapes.

The Manaslu trek's highest point is Larkya La Pass, at about 5,160 meters (16,929 ft). Crossing this pass is both the most difficult and rewarding part of the journey, but it offers stunning views of Himlung Himal, Cheo Himal, and Annapurna II.

Yes, you can combine the Manaslu Circuit Trek with the Tsum Valley Trek for an extended, culturally rich adventure. This option includes visits to sacred monasteries, hidden valleys, and traditional Tibetan villages, but it involves extra days and permits.

Solo trekking isn't allowed on the Manaslu Circuit because it's a restricted area. However, solo travelers can join group departures or be paired with other trekkers through a licensed trekking agency like Overland Trek Nepal to fulfil the minimum permit requirements.
