This ultimate Himalayan adventure combines the highest trekking peak in Nepal with one of the most popular climbing peaks in the Everest region. This dual-summit expedition provides the perfect balance of challenge and achievement for mountaineers looking to progress their high-altitude skills. An expedition of 20-22 days in the Khumbu Region of Nepal is an excellent opportunity for beginners to begin their mountaineering journey in the Himalayas.

Mera Peak, Nepal, stands as the highest trekking peak in Nepal at 6,476 meters above sea level, while Island Peak (Imja Tse) reaches 6,189 meters. Though both are classified as “trekking peaks,” they each present unique challenges and rewards that make a combined expedition particularly appealing for ambitious climbers. If you are an experienced mountaineer and want to test the beauty of the Nepalese Himalayas then, this combined expedition is for you. The journey allows you to witness some of the magical peaks including Mt. Everest, Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Makalu, Nuptse, Chamlang Himal, and numerous other vistas.

Why Choose Mera and Island Peak for Your Nepal Expedition

When planning for Mera and Island Peak climbing in Nepal, it’s essential to understand what makes this combination so special. The expedition offers:

  • Experience with both technical and non-technical climbing
  • Spectacular views of five 8,000m peaks, including Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu
  • Cultural immersion in remote Sherpa villages
  • Less crowded routes than the standard Everest Base Camp trek
  • Perfect progression for mountaineers building their skills

Many experienced climbers recommend Mera and Island Peak climbing in Nepal as the perfect progression for mountaineers looking to build their high-altitude skills before attempting more challenging Himalayan expeditions.

All About Mera Peak, Nepal

Mera Peak, Nepal, stands as the highest trekking peak in the country at 6,476 meters above sea level. Despite its impressive altitude, it’s considered one of the more technically straightforward 6,000m+ peaks, making it an excellent choice for climbers with limited high-altitude experience.
Likewise, Mount Mera is located in the Mahalangur section of the Himalayas in the Solukhumbu District.

The panoramic views from Mera Peak, Nepal, include five of the world’s 8,000m mountains, including Everest, Lhotse, Cho Oyu, Makalu, and Kanchenjunga. This spectacular vista is often cited as one of the best summit views in the entire Himalayan range.

All About Island Peak, Nepal

Island Peak is also known as Imja Tse in the Local community. So, don’t get confused between these two names. This popular trekking peak in Nepal lies in the Everest Region, standing tall at 6189 meters. Though this peak is above 6000 meters, beginners with no mountaineering experience can climb this peak with a good level of physical fitness.

Is Island Peak harder than the Mera Peak climbing?

Honestly, no peaks are easy to climb in Nepal. However, from a safety point of view, the Mera Peak Climbing is easier than Island Peak. But do not get misguided about these peaks being a trekking peak in Nepal & they may be easy to climb. Even the Classic Everest Base Camp Trek can be difficult for travelers with no trekking experience. Mera Peak may be higher than Island Peak in terms of Elevation. However, Island Peak, with its narrow rocky ridge, glacial route, and numerous icefalls, makes it harder than the Mera Peak Climb.

Ways to prepare for Successful peak climbing in Nepal

Follow responsible tourism during the journey

Preserving nature, culture, and the pride of high mountains are our responsibilities. Therefore, during this peak climbing in Nepal, we are well aware of our activities and their effect on the Himalayas. That’s why our clients must deposit all the garbage they produce during the trip. If in case, climbers fail to bring back the garbage, they have to pay a penalty of up to $500 as a garbage deposit.

Besides nature and mountains, respecting the local atmosphere is equally crucial. Along the trip, you will be staying at the teahouses of the local people, mostly Sherpa. Enjoying their local dishes, greeting them with “Namaste”, and involving their lifestyle gives them joy. Likewise, while visiting the local monasteries make sure you follow the local rules set by Buddhism.

Travel Insurance Requirement for the Peak Climbing

Often travel insurance is required whenever you are roaming around the world. Just like that, for Nepal, you will need quality travel insurance whenever you are doing trekking and climbing activities in Nepal. Ensure you purchase quality insurance that covers flight delays, cancellations, medical bills, Helicopter rescue, and so on. Nepal is a landlocked country with diverse landscapes and vegetation. Sudden weather changes, risk of natural disasters, and other uncertain incidents may occur. Hence, to be on the safe side financially and mentally during the trip, make sure you have bought top-quality travel insurance for peak climbing in Nepal.

Permit card for the peak climbing expedition in Nepal

To climb both of these peaks, you will need several permit cards from the Nepal Mountaineering Association and the Khumbu Region. Here are the details of the required permit cards:

  • Climbing permit for both Mera and Island Peak Issued by NMA: It costs USD 250 for each peak during the Spring season. Likewise, in the autumn season, it costs USD 125 per person, per peak. However, if you decide to climb in winter and summer, the permit costs USD 70 per person per peak.
  • Makalu Barun National Park Entry Permit Card for Mera peak that cost USD 25 per person.
  • Sagaramtha National Park Entry Permit Card those costs USD 25 per person.
  • Khumbu Region Municipality Permit Card costs USD 25 per person.

The ideal time to climb Mera and Island Peak

The best time to climb Mera Peak and Island Peak is during the pre-monsoon (spring) and post-monsoon (autumn) seasons, offering the most excellent weather and clear mountain views. Spring (March to May) brings mild temperatures, blooming rhododendrons, and excellent climbing conditions, making it a favorite among mountaineers as well as trekkers. The trail condition during the spring is snowy in some parts of the route including the summit. Autumn (September to November) provides crisp, dry weather with minimal rainfall and snowfall, ensuring safer ascents and breathtaking panoramic views of the mountains. While winter and monsoon seasons pose challenges like extreme cold and heavy snowfall, well-prepared climbers seeking solitude may still attempt the climb. Planning your expedition during these ideal months ensures a rewarding and safe Himalayan adventure.

Climbing Gear to carry for Island and Mera Peak

Climbing Gear for Peak Climbing in Nepal is crucial for a successful summit. Packing the right gear and equipment always makes your journey easy without any difficulties. Here are the common gear you must have in your backpack:

  • Climbing Gear: Ropes, Harness, Crampons, Ice Axe, Helmet, Carabiners, Slings, Ascender, Descender, Sleeping Bag, Backpack, Trekking Poles, Water bottle,
  • Clothing: Base Layers, Insulated Jacket, Waterproof Jacket, Windproof Jacket, Gloves, Gaiters, Socks, Buff,
  • Footwear: Mountaineering Boot, Trekking Boot, and Camp shoes.
  • Other Essential: First Aid Kit, Map, GPS device, Walkie-Talkie, Sun Glasses, Toiletries, Camera, Extra Battery, Powerbank, etc.

How challenging is climbing both Mera and Island Peak at the same time?

Climbing both peaks at the same time is physically and mentally demanding. Climbers must have top-level physical conditioning to climb Mera Peak, Cross Amphu Lapcha Pass, and again to climb Island Peak. You can find numerous challenges along the route. Moreover, weather changes, and altitude sickness could be another set of difficulties during the entire trip. The rugged surfaces, slippery tracks, risk of avalanches, tricky narrow edges, and high passes can drain your energy physically. That’s why climbers must be prepared to face these kinds of challenges and overcome them mentally as well.

Importance of Acclimatization to avoid Altitude sickness during the Peak Climb

Climbing Mera Peak (6,476m) and Island Peak (6,189m) is a thrilling adventure, but rushing the ascent can put you at serious risk of altitude sickness. As you gain elevation, oxygen levels drop, making it harder for your body to adapt. Without proper acclimatization, symptoms like headaches, nausea, dizziness, and even life-threatening high-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) can force you to turn back. That’s why spending extra days at key spots like Khare (5,045m) for Mera Peak and Chhukung (4,730m) for Island Peak is essential. Taking it slow, drinking plenty of water, and doing short acclimatization hikes help your body adapt, boosting your chances of a successful summit. That’s why our climbing guide will give you tips on avoiding sickness during the ascend.

Camping accommodation during the Peak climbing in Nepal

Camping during the Mera Peak Summit

The Mera Peak climbing, requires tented camping at higher altitudes due to the remote terrain. Climbers stay at Mera Peak Base Camp (5,300m) near Mera La Pass for acclimatization before moving to Mera High Camp (5,800m) for the summit push. Camping facilities include four-season tents, warm sleeping bags, a communal dining tent, and portable toilets, ensuring a comfortable stay in extreme conditions. Our Guides and porters manage logistics, carrying food, gear, and fuel. While basic, camping under a starlit Himalayan sky, surrounded by Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu, is an unforgettable experience.

Camping during the Island Peak Summit

Similar to Mera, this peak climbing also requires camping accommodation before the summit. This peak is known for its steep ascent and technical climbing and requires a well-equipped base camp at 5,087m in the Imja Valley. Some climbers also use a high camp at 5,500m to shorten the summit push. The campsite offers strong expedition tents, -30°C-rated sleeping bags, a dining tent with warm meals, portable toilets, and a secure storage area for mountaineering gear. Given the technical ice climbing required for Island Peak, proper rest at camp is crucial. Though physically demanding, camping here offers stunning views of Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and the breathtaking Khumbu region.

Note: Other than camping accommodation, climbers will stay in a teahouse which provides basic facilities like a comfortable bed, shared bathroom, and dining hall for meal time.

Meal and drinking water facilities in the Camp Accommodation

Regarding the meal, you will be provided three times meals in the teahouses that you can choose from the menu. However, at the campsite, the meal items are limited but we make sure you get enough fuel for climbing. Here are the common meals you will get at teahouses and campsites respectively:

  • Breakfast: Porridge, Muesli, Bread, Omelet, Boiled Eggs, Hash Brown, Pancake, Chapati, Tea, and Coffee.
  • Lunch and Dinner: Nepali Daal Bhat, Fried Rice, Plain Rice, Vegetable curry, Momo, Noodles, Pasta, Macaroni, Potato Dishes, Sherpa Stew, Thukpa, etc.
  • Meals at Campsite: Noodles, Thukpa, Egg Items, Muesli, Porridge, Pasta, Macaroni, and canned food.

Likewise, drinking water is easily available in the teahouses either bottled or boiled water. However, we recommend buying boiled or filtered water to avoid plastic usage. Also, at the campsite, the porter will carry the water or even boil the snow as per the necessity to drink the water.
