Getting into Bhutan

There are two ways to reach Bhutan either overland or by flight:

  • Traveling by Air: The only international airport situated in Paro connects several destinations such as Kathmandu, Bangkok, Singapore, Dhaka, Delhi, Kokotta, Guwahati, Bagdogra etc. Paro Airport is situated at an elevation of 2225m above sea level. There are only two airlines (Druk and Bhutan Air) operating to and from Paro Airport. The flight is the best way to connect to Bhutan from several destinations in South Asia.
  • Traveling by Land: Phuentsholing, Samdruk Jongkhar, and Gelephu are along the southern borders of India which are only open border crossings for international tourists in Bhutan.

Food and Water:

Bhutanese cuisine typically consists of rice, vegetables, and meat dishes, often flavored with spices like chili and cheese. Most meals include traditional sides such as ema dashi (chili and cheese stew) and momos (dumplings). Bottled water is widely available and safe to drink, but it’s advisable to carry a reusable water bottle and refill it with purified water provided by accommodations or restaurants.

Best Season and Weather Conditions:

The best time to visit Bhutan for a short tour is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons. During these months, the weather is generally mild with clear skies, making it ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities. Winter (December to February) can be cold, especially in higher altitudes, while the monsoon season (June to August) brings heavy rainfall.

Road Conditions for Land Transport:

Bhutan’s road network is well-maintained, but some roads, especially those leading to remote areas, may be narrow and winding. Land transport via car or bus offers scenic views of Bhutan’s landscapes, but travelers should be prepared for occasional delays due to road conditions or construction work.

Accommodation:

Accommodation options in Bhutan range from luxury hotels and resorts to cozy guesthouses and homestays, each offering a unique experience. Most accommodations reflect Bhutanese architecture and hospitality, providing comfortable amenities and authentic cultural encounters. Advance booking is recommended, especially during peak tourist seasons.

Engage with locals respectfully, learn about their customs and etiquette, and seek permission before taking photographs, especially in sacred areas.

Travel Visa & Insurance:

Travel to Bhutan requires a tourist visa, which must be arranged through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator. Additionally, travelers should obtain travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and evacuation for peace of mind during their journey.

Entrance Fee for Tourist Spots:
